In 2006, renowned piano maker Steinway & Sons selected Pearl River Group of Guangzhou China to build its Essex line of pianos. This was not surprising given that Pearl River had already been building a substantial number of models for Yamaha Coporation for many years. At that point,  Pearl River Chairman Huang Weilin decided that they should build their best piano for their own label rather than for Yamaha or Steinway, so he decided to create a new company brand that would be the pinnacle of the Pearl River production lineup.

Mr. Weilin solicited renowned Swiss piano designer Lothar Thomma, who was the designer of pianos to C. Bechstein, Steingraeber, Fazioli and many other prominent European manufacturers, and asked him to completely design a new line of pianos, from the ground up, to be named Kayserburg. Thomma spent two years designing these incredible instruments, and carefully inspects every step of the production process to ensure a truly world class instrument of distinction is produced, and no shortcuts are taken in crafting these pianos. Final inspection of these pianos is under the watchful eye of craftsmen from the venerable Bayreuth Germany piano company Steingraeber & Sohne.

Using genuine Renner hammers from Stuttgart Germany and Rosslau piano wire from Rosslau Germany, Kayserburg pianos are truly crafted in a European manner resulting in warmth of tone and depth of performance. Mr. Thomma's legendary expertise has  resulted in the crafting of pianos with distinction and incomparable value. Mr. Thomma has positioned Kayserburg at the pinnacle of the Pearl River manufacturing line-up (which includes the brands Pearl River, Yamaha, Essex -built for Steinway, and Ritmüller) and each instrument has hand selected woods and veneers from the vast selection of Pearl River resources. The keyboard has genuine Ebony sharps and the soundboard is  all tight-grained European grade spruce. Bass strings are solid copper hand-wound and the plate is sand cast as in the most expensive Germany brands.
